RE-UPLOAD: The Sisterhood / The Sisters of Mercy - This Corrosion Demos (MP3)

The "This Corrosion" Demos are probably the hardest stuff to find from the Sisters related material. They're not on the Floodland demos, because they were demoed as the (never released) The Sisterhood second single. A tape was "found" containing 6 versions of the song with vocals by almost all the Sisterhood members and Andrew Eldritch. They've been appearing (mainly in YouTube), but never all of them, and mostly the ones that feature Andrew on vocals. These are the one's I could collect and I cannot really say much about them since I don't have enough information about sources. Not really sure if they are all by the Sisterhood or some are actually by the Sisters of Mercy. The sound is very rough and lacks all the pomp of the final song. The Mp3 with the James Ray vocals is broken, so it marks 7.26m but actually only runs until 4.30m, but you can listen to it without other problems.

We're getting closer to the summer festivals tour from TSOM, so it's a good ocassion to do an upgrade on the unreleased material from the band, including some 2009 recordings. This compilation gathers the best sounding versions of each song and was done by Mr. Wah, who was kind enough to let me post his link here. In order to escape his contract with WEA/East West records for two remaining Sisters albums Andrew Eldritch reputedly spent an afternoon mumbling into a microphone to record what he calls an album that "bears no resemblance to any quality product, let alone the Sisters". For a total of two days work over "reject material of some amateur acquaintances" we have an album of "rather bad sub-techno" that dwells almost exclusively on the glorification of shooting people and selling drugs to schoolchildren.

ABOUT SSV (which is not The Sisters Of Mercy or even close)

"SSV are not the Sisters. Their official full name is SSV-NSMABAAOTWMODAACOTIATW.
Could this possibly stand for "Screw Shareholder Value - not so much a band as another opportunity to waste money on drugs and ammunition, courtesy of the idiots at Time Warner"?
Surely not. That would require a comma.
SSV's only album ('Go Figure') features music by P.Bellendir and words by T.Schroeder. It was produced by P.Bellendir in 1997. It does not feature anything by Andrew Eldritch except some sampled vocals.
Because of those sampled vocals, East West bought the record (without having heard it) and agreed to release Andrew from his recording contract. What led them to do such a strange thing, after years of intransigence?
Despite their threats to sue Andrew for not delivering any Sisters records, they were perhaps more worried that a judge would regard a seven year strike as evidence that the contract was dead anyway. So they took what they could get. Andrew has neither the money nor the desire to spend years on a court case, and he was happy to accept immediate freedom on these particular terms. He was very happy for East West to get their SSV record.
Unfortunately for East West, their SSV record is Not Very Good - to put it mildly. It's reasonable to assume that "techno without drums" is designed merely to bore and annoy.
East West have not released the SSV album, but they did send tapes to the press. One copy landed on the internet, so you could pick the album up for free, in MP3 format. Maybe you still can, but of course we wouldn't be allowed to give you the URL if we knew it. We don't think the record's worth downloading, anyway.
We gather that East West have remixed two tracks, but they're not allowed to remix any more. One day, East West may decide to release the SSV album. We can't recommend it.

Thanks to waterisnat for sharing this version on Dime, I already had posted a version of this session ages ago, but this is a more complete set, including the original broadcast, a Pre-FM version of Jolene plus the 2008 re-broadcast in MP2.

lineage: pre-FM recordings -> [unknown vinyl/tape generations] -> Entertainment Or Death bootleg CD ->  wav -> remastering in Adobe Audition 3.0 (fixing DC bias offset, speed adjustment, manual click removal, phase correction, normalisation) -> FLAC (level 8) with Trader's Little Helper

Over the years these BBC session tracks have appeared on numerous bootleg LPs and CDs. In all but two cases they appear with intros and outros cut, in an attempt to remove all DJ banter. The only exceptions are the early nineties CD release "Entertainment Or Death" by legendary Sisters bootleg label Palazzograssi (trademark of quality, indeed!), and disc 1 of the "Kama Sutra" 2CD (which is, in effect, a perfect clone of the Palazzograssi disc). These are still the only two bootlegs where the four Jensen session tracks can be found with beginnings and endings intact from a pre-FM source tape. Having said that, the recordings are at least a couple of generations removed from the master and there are traces of a vinyl source in the lineage as well; more importantly the songs are all way off speed.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of this session BBC 6Music did a rebroadcast. This was duly torrented here in March of 2008, albeit as an unedited lossy mp2 file captured from the 160 kbps DVB-T stream. Unfortunately this transmission was marred by cross fades between the tracks, an annoying station call over the intro of Valentine and one incredibly I-N-S-I-P-I-D DJ. The good thing about it was that it presented all tracks at the correct speed.

Ever since 2008 I've been meaning to remaster the bootleg tracks and do a re-edit of the 6Music broadcast. I've finally gotten round to this. The songs you find here are taken from "Entertainment Or Death", DC bias and speed adjusted, phase-corrected and normalized (rest assured that not a single kb of music has been subjected to excessive compression or limiting!); a couple of stray clicks and pops have also been removed.

As a bonus I've included the original mp2 file of the 2008 re-broadcast, as well as the version of Jolene appearing on the "Black Planet" bootleg CD, also speed adjusted, phase-corrected and normalized.
