NOTES:
The Sisters Of Mercy anno 2014. Is there a point?
Some things have stayed the same. Eldritch maintains the same stage presence
he has always possessed; when you can see him, that is, because the trademark
dry ice is also still very much in evidence. The hat and even the hair under
it may be long gone, but Eldritch is still a convincing frontman.
Doktor Avalanche, the drum machine, is the only other member of the band to
have remained faithful to his leader; and to have avoided the sack. That said,
Herr Avalanche long ago shuffled off his Oberheim DMX coil and was
reincarnated as a trinity of Apple Macs at the back left of the stage.
Actually, one of those Apple Macs might be the bass player, because he, too,
evolved beyond human form many moons ago.
The current guitarists with the band are Ben Christo and Chris Catalyst, both
of whom have been with the band long enough now that one might daringly speak
of a stable line-up, if one were so inclined. Neither would have been out of
nappies when the original line-up was treading the boards, but only a churl
would hold that against them.
Most of the older material sounds good in the hands of this incarnation of the
band, although notably songs from 'First And Last And Always' are overwrought
in this format. They're too metal and missing the delicate touch of Wayne
Hussey's twelve string; or at least someone's twelve string.
There are also a few songs where Catalyst's backing vocals rise far above
those of Eldritch, effectively promoting him to the role of lead singer. The
gulf between the former's pitch and the latter's bass-baritone makes me wince
at times. 'When You Don't See Me' and particularly 'Flood II' are cases in
point. Neither works for me because of this.
The band may not have released a new record in over 20 years, but that doesn't
mean there's no new material in the set. Actually, some of that 'new' material
is 14 years old now itself, so it makes more sense to simply refer to it as
unreleased.
Almost all of this unreleased material was written by past band members, so it
will almost certainly never see the light of day on an official release; if,
indeed, there ever even is another official release.
Eldritch has stated that the band make more money now from touring than they
ever did from releasing records, a fact that just goes to show how much the
dynamics of the music business have changed in the last three decades.
Incidentally, speaking of making a living from touring, at €39 for a ticket,
I'm not surprised it yields a decent living. The gig seems overpriced to me in
relation to other bands. On the other hand, The Max, whilst not sold out, is
pleasantly full tonight, so if the market will bear the asking price, it's not
overpriced at all in purely economic terms. Whichever way you look at it,
however, tonight's gig is no bargain.
For my money, none of the new -- sorry, unreleased -- material comes close to
the standard of the older material. The fact that most of it will never see an
official release is perhaps a blessing in disguise.
Happily, there are plenty of old favourites in the set-list to remind us of
our misspent youth in the band's glory days. 'Ribbons', 'Blood Money',
'Alice', 'Valentine' and 'This Corrosion' all sound grand here and as fresh as
a daisy.
The first encore goes to 'Kiss The Carpet', which, I have to say, has never
sounded better. It's followed by the storming duo of 'Lucretia My Reflection'
and the rifftastic 'Vision Thing'.
The second encore commences with an overly heavy 'First And Last And Always'
and continues with the unlikely choice of a cover of Dick Dale's 'Misirlou';
included, I suspect, for no other reason than to showcase the axe skills of
Eldritch's young henchmen.
They really go for it, too. It's all standing on the floor monitors and
leaning into the audience while grimacing and chasing riffs around the
fretboard. It's a Spinal Tap moment, but the Sisters never were averse to
parody; it was everyone else who took them so seriously.
To finish, something even bigger than 'This Corrosion' or 'Vision Thing' is
called for. The job falls to 'Temple Of Love', which I fail to even recognise
until the chorus. It just goes to show how different some of the songs sound
when performed by this line-up.
The band rip through the songs at breakneck pace. The versions are short and
nary a second separates many of them from their successor. We get through 21
songs in 80 minutes.
I'm not sure that I've ever heard a genuinely excellent recording of the
latter day Sisters. I was therefore at pains to produce a high quality
document of this evening's affair. In spite of the best efforts of some
ignorant tossers around me, that goal has been achieved. If you're a fan of
the band, you should enjoy listening to this.

The Whistle Test tracks come from a very clean vinyl bootleg 7". Sound quality is excellent and the performances are complete; I have even restored the beginning of First and Last and Always.

As a bonus I've included video footage of the Whistle Test performance. Because it came with very muffled sound, I have synched the images up with the excellent audio recordings from the bootleg 7" - to very good effect, I might add. The picture quality is great, too (courtesy of Solitude - many thanks, P.!), though occasionally there's some static and picture travelling (but never do sound & vision go out of synch). Also, the beginnings of both tracks and the end of Marian are truncated. Still, there's plenty left to give you a fine impression of the band in full action! See screenshots.

The Sisters Of Mercy - Sportpaleis, Gent, Belgium - 16.05.1991 (Flac)
NOTE: By some stupid reason, the photos that were originally on the fileset are missing from the RAR file... To make up for that, I treated them in Photoshop (they're quite better now), and posted them in full resolution, please copy them to the recording folder after downloading.
Thanks to the original uploader.
Original Info File:
Tape received in my trading period from end 80's until mid 90's.
As shown on concert ticket I've included, this concert should have taken place on
15th November 1990 in Deinze, Het Brielpoort (an awful hall where acoustic does not exist...).
The concert was eventually cancelled and tickets remained valid. The new date was later
announced as 16th May 1991 and fortunately location was changed to Gent, Sportpaleis.
This is the only gig I saw in this venue and it was really OK regarding the sound but also the
configuration. People could access either the playground area (standing) or the balconeys (sitting),
but most insteresting was that between both, there was a velodrome. During "Vision Thing", Andrew
disappeared off the stage and started running, singing all along the velodrome with people going mad
and trying to approach the barriers along the velodrome where Andrew was standing. I could take
a picture of this particular moment and this is also included in the post, along with some others.
Be indulgent regarding the quality as this was taken with my old pocket cam.
Unknown recording equipment and it should be a lowgen copy.
Very good sound quality and I processed a slight hiss reduction + some fade in / out (several tape
or recording flips)

NOTE: The Date on the info file and folder is wrong, please correct after downloading.
Thanks to sleepchamber for sending this tape to rip.
Contrast Clause: There was a version of this concert uploaded by Cyberbio in 2008, this is a rip of a different more complete tape of the the same source, using different equipment and at a diferent bitrate.
Cyberbio noted that is tape wasn´t complete, missing Alice and Adrenochome. My tape mentions both songs in the cover, but actually only Alice is present..
One more song then, probably still not complete. My rip sounds similar to cyberbio, but with a little less tape hiss, so you can call it an upgrade.
Note: This recording has most of the tracks chopped by the recorder, so the order of the songs is probably not correct.

RE-UPLOAD: The Sisterhood / The Sisters of Mercy - This Corrosion Demos (MP3)
The "This Corrosion" Demos are probably the hardest stuff to find from the Sisters related material. They're not on the Floodland demos, because they were demoed as the (never released) The Sisterhood second single. A tape was "found" containing 6 versions of the song with vocals by almost all the Sisterhood members and Andrew Eldritch. They've been appearing (mainly in YouTube), but never all of them, and mostly the ones that feature Andrew on vocals. These are the one's I could collect and I cannot really say much about them since I don't have enough information about sources. Not really sure if they are all by the Sisterhood or some are actually by the Sisters of Mercy. The sound is very rough and lacks all the pomp of the final song. The Mp3 with the James Ray vocals is broken, so it marks 7.26m but actually only runs until 4.30m, but you can listen to it without other problems.
1. This Corrosion (Demo - Andrew Eldritch and James Ray vocals) - 4.30m
2. This Corrosion (Demo - Andrew Eldritch vocals) - 8.50m
3. This Corrosion (Demo - Andrew Eldritch vocals) - 6.28m

RE-UPLOAD: The Sisters of Mercy - Good Things (MP3)
We're getting closer to the summer festivals tour from TSOM, so it's a good ocassion to do an upgrade on the unreleased material from the band, including some 2009 recordings. A big Thank You to him, for his effort and generosity and to Being645 for the Megaupload mirror.
