Possibly the worst piece of crap to be released bearing the Sisters of Mercy name...

 By 1986, the bootleggers were surely running out of ideas to release stuff. Thanks to sleepchamber for sending me this one. The tracks are not ripped from vinyl, instead are from bootlegs CDs, since the sound was better.

Info from SistersWiki:

The title of this 7" bootleg derives from the fact that the complete cover is mirror inverted so that BURN can be read NRUB. Therefore the single is also known as Burn 7". As the mirror-inverted Head & Star logo on the back cover is crossed by the lettering "FIERCER THAN THOU" and the same lettering does appear on the vinyl as well, the bootleg is also referred to as Fiercer Than Thou as well.

REPOST NOTE:

I guess this would now be considered a second generation bootleg.  Although I appreciate the recording highly and the speed in which it became available, the original cutting of tracks seems to have been done in haste.

This version is of the complete recording, but with track turnovers edited in Wavlab.  If anyone objects... um -- I'll look into it.  I made my own personal edited version to fit on a single CD-R (wherein I also reduced the 'clip' when Von yells "Vote yourselves sicker" in response to... ehem... Bush at the beginning of 'Vision Thing').  I did try adjusting gain and make it louder, but now realize that many of the bass tones just turn to mud.  The original mix is rather clean so adjust your volume and EQ manually.

I recommend listening to crowd banter track simply for the guy screaming such things as "Andrew ...  I love you ... god damn...".  It's wonderful stuff.

Free pre-tour for-fans-only test-out gig, under name of Near Meth Experience. Announced three days before the gig via the official site. "02 August 2005 : NIGHT OFF. We'll be watching Near Meth Experience at a pub in Leeds.", it said. "Near Meth Experience play for free, because they're a shambles. "The band played as New Meth Experience in Leeds in 1996 and 1997. This last concert ended up being reviewed (negatively) on UK's heavyweight music news weekly NME; the reviewer completely missed a point that the gig was free try-out. Everybody thought this was the last of pre-tour freebies. Until now. This might (or might not) have something to do with the fact that the new guitarist Chris May makes ends meet by working at Joseph's Well.

Sleepchamber's The Sisters Of Mercy Tapes #12 - Strathclyde University, Glasgow, UK - Soundcheck - 09.03.1985 (Flac)

The sound on this one is not great, I think that the taper was not on the same room as the band... Or maybe the tape is a couple generations too far... Or both.

Anyway, the most interesting thing is the fact that Eldritch sings Stop Dragging My Heart Around acapella before a couple of the songs, like he actually came to do on the 1992 tour seven years later, but here it seems that the band is experimenting it as a possible intro to one of the songs.

Then there's a long version of Starway to Heaven, wich is a curiosity but does not really works that well. It's an alternative to the more common short version that populates various bootlegs.

There's also a short but much more groovy instrumental version of Ghostrider, wich gives a hint that the song never really got as far as it could in the actual live set, not actually becoming the beast that the band wanted to close their concerts.


This recording was on the first side of the tape and it lasts 45 minutes. I have some conflicting info that says that this is the lenght of the circulating recording but also that it ends with Louie Louie, wich is not present in this tape, that ends with Burn.

Side B of the tape was labeled, Rare Outtakes, but in fact was a mix of Demos and live versions, I included the three more interesting and less common songs as extras.

First it's a version of Knocking on Heaven's Door with a real drummer and female vocals,  from the encore with the Skeletal Family in Hamburg 1985, the last time Andrew and Wayne shared a stage.

Next is a version from Gimme Gimme Gimme that seems sourced on a SBD, and for last a short version of Stairway to Heaven, both seems sourced in the All Along The Watchtower single bootleg.

Very good sound. By the taper notes, he doesn't seems very into the whole Doktor Avalanche thing, all the drums, bass and synth are launched by the Doc's nurse since 1993, it's not quite playback... Anyway, Thanks to him for sharing his recording.

The "highlight" of this show was surely the power shortage during "Dominion"!
The band had used too much smoke on the stage (one could barely see anything) so that the smoke detection alarm went off and shut down the power circuit of the whole building. It was so obvious that the band were using playback that almost everybody had to grin or laugh...

After 15 minutes of patient waiting the ('playback') show continued. Definitely a TSOM night to remember!

The Sisters Of Mercy - Fenders Ballroom, Long Beach - 30.05.1985 - SBD version (Flac)

One of the more famous concerts from TSOM, various versions exist: a complete audience recording, the video and an incomplete soundboard recording, The first two were already posted here in FLAC and DVD. This one is the incomplete soundboard recording, sourced on the "Floorshow" bootleg CD, wich was one of the first posts I ever did on DCR, but in MP3. Time for an upgrade to FLAC.

I really don't like much this version, because the voice is completely above everything else in the mix, wich is normal for a concert on a small club, but it's quite distracting and doesn't really benefit the songs.

The band didn't played lice this song many times, until the 90's where it became part of the Comfortably Numb medley, but with a completeley diferent musical background. Another rip from the tapes sleepchamber sent me. This is the last with this gear, I changed the method of ripping since I wasn't totally satisfied with the end result. Even so it sounds good, but nothing fancy. Comparing with the version cyberbio shared some years ago on DIME it has less tape hiss but it's also less rich on the higher frequencies.

Sleepchamber The Sisters Of Mercy Tapes #3 - University, Lancaster, UK - 07.10.1984 (Flac)

It's been a while since I posted any of my rips of the box of TSOM recordings sleepchamber sent me, mainly because I wasn't happy with the results. But I now got a new tape deck, and it seems that most of the noise that I had to remove from the tapes was made by the old deck. This sounds much better than the other, even if it's an average quality recording. So expect tto a lot more of these tapes rips in the near future (after all it was more than 100 tapes he sent me).

I asked the help of Heartland member Meth (Big Thanks) to check quality of this rip in comparison with the rip Cyberbio did a long time ago. The result it's that this tape rip has a little less trebble but also less tape hiss, so it's up to you to decide wich one you prefer.

The Sisters of Mercy - Amphi Festival, Cologne, Germany - 21.07.2012 (Flac/Mp3)

This recording appeared for sale on eBay, wich is disgusting. Here in 

the room, we can't help feeling a little guilty thinking that maybe the

scumbag who did it has downloaded here, trying to make a profit of what

we work hard to give you for free. The tapers both were shocked and even

tough we don't know wich version was on the CD, the cover was the one 

made by reverend for Cyberbio's version.

There's not much we can do about these situations, unless reporting the 

seller to eBay (done) and share it again in all versions avaiable, so that

it reaches more people FOR FREE, as it was supposed to be in the intention 

of the tapers

HUGE THANKS to Cyberbio and DocSommer for sharing these recording, probably 

the last they will do, thanks to the wiseguy who tried to sell this bootleg

on eBay. So if by any chance you come across a situation like this on eBay 

or other similar site, please report the seller, it's the only way we can 

stop this situation, before more tapers decide not to share their recordings. 

So here you have them, in the original formats shared by the tapers but 

tracksplitted. These recordinge were cutted and tagged by Andy, who also 

uploaded the files, so for this post you can thank him also.
